We compromised and did this:
I used the 'too busy' (according to my son who wanted a ALL blue pillowcase) print on the edge as an accent edge instead of using it for the main area. For the main area I went with an solid blue fabric. Overall I thought it was a fair compromise...though now I am behind on my sewing and still 3 pillowcase short, but at least I have 1 happy little more :).

How funny! My husband is the same way, he prefers plain jane across the board while I like the 'busy' look. I just made my son a pillow with remnant fabric and had one "busy" side and one "plain jane" side. He's too little to have a strong opinion either way...for now! I like your compromise with your boys.
