Squared Finished!

A pop of color to celebrate the beginning of Autumn - aka my favorite season.



Squared finished just in time to catch the changing colors of leaves and the first chill of the Autumn nights.

A view of the front:


The front consisted of 288 squares - each 3" when completed.  A nice combination of bright autumn colors :).

A view of the back:


The back repeated the 3" squares using 2 strips to contrast the off-white solid. I love bright splash of color against the solid back drop. 


For this quilt I decided to try tying it off with knots instead of quilting with machine or by hand.  The reasoning was not to intrude the small squares and also to give the quilt a more rustic/earthy/loose feel.  Here's a closeup of the finished knots:

From the Front:

Each row, I alternated the embroidery color - auburn/orange and green. Each intersection of the front had a knot.

From the Back:

The knot pattern created a nice 'x' in the back for every knot. This gave the back a nice decorated and purposeful look.

For the border I went with a matching maroon/dark red printed fabric. It went perfectly with the color scheme:


This quilt is definitely a fun and pretty reminder of the season ahead. I look forward to using it around the house for a splash of color and warmth when needed.

Quilting Method: Hand Knotted with 'X' pattern for the back.  Embroidery thread.

Squared: Knots!

Here's a sneak on the quilting process for Squared:



Yep that's right I'm finally giving the tie quilting a shot. This quilt top consist of small 3" completed squares so I don't want to much quilting lines sewing and I've always wanted to knot a quilt :).

Start off by sewing in and out of the corner of each square, creating a figure 'X' on the back of the quilt. Continue with each corner until you reach the end of the row or you run out of thread:



Next tie knots at each corner, cutting it about 1/3" - 1/2" after each knot.

I looked at a few methods online for ideas on how to make the knots. This is the final knot I decided to make - I'm not good with knot names so I drew up a diagram of what I did:


Diagram of knot.  It's pretty much a Square knot, but instead of looping once, loop twice :).

Voila! A knot!



Repeat with all the corners until all of the blocks are knotted. I alternated each row with green and maroon thread (embroidery thread - 6 thread count).  Hopefully I could finish this up soon :).
